Educated at Diocesesan College (Bishops). One of the first two Rhodes Scholars to read at Oxford. Later got the Old Diocesans (OD) Union off the ground. Was very involved with Western Province Cricket Club all his adult life. Served in the 9th (Sportsmen) SAI in East Africa as a Machine Gunner, was wounded twice but severely enough in one of the campaigns to be returned to South Africa, hospitalised until recovery and then discharged from further service. He later wrote a book "Foot-slogging in East Africa" published by Maskew Miller in 1918. This was a series of "sketches" based on letters he had written to his mother while in East Africa on Active Service. Played First Class Cricket for Western Province: http//content-usa.cricinfo.com/south africa/. Appears in team photographs outside Long Room at WPCC Pavillion, Newlands As a KC (later QC) he practised from his own chambers and not as part of the H. Reid & Nephew Law firm. Closed his chambers when in his early 70's but continued to do chamber work from his home at new Inversnaid, Camp Ground Road, Newlands. Served as Chancellor to the Archdiocese of the Church of the Province of South Africa from 1930 unntil his death and was working on a Church matter at the time if his death. Left an Estate Valued at R209 777.00 the bulk of which was left to Bishops after some smaller bequests had been filled. This was a rather substantial sum at the time.
